WHAT IS IT
Fever (Pyrexia) is a temporary increase in body temperature, usually above 38°C (100.4°F). It is not a disease itself but a sign that the body is fighting an infection or illness.
CAUSES
• Infections – Viral (common cold, flu), bacterial, or parasitic infections
• Inflammation – Conditions like arthritis or autoimmune diseases
• Heat exhaustion – Due to excessive heat exposure
• Medications – Some drugs can cause fever as a side effect
• Vaccinations – Mild fever can occur after immunization
• Serious infections – Such as dengue, malaria, or typhoid
SYMPTOMS
• Increased body temperature
• Chills and shivering
• Sweating
• Headache
• Body aches (muscle pain)
• Weakness or fatigue
• Loss of appetite
• Sometimes dehydration
RISK FACTORS
• Children and elderly (weaker immunity)
• Poor hygiene or exposure to infections
• Traveling to areas with infectious diseases
• Weakened immune system (due to illness or medications)
DIAGNOSIS
• Temperature measurement using a thermometer
• Blood tests – To detect infections (CBC, malaria, dengue, etc.)
• Urine test – To check for urinary infections
• Other tests (like chest X-ray) if required based on symptoms
TREATMENT
• Rest and adequate hydration (drink plenty of fluids)
• Paracetamol (Acetaminophen) to reduce fever (as advised by a doctor)
• Treat the underlying cause of fever
• Avoid self-medication with antibiotics
PREVENTION
• Maintain good hygiene (regular handwashing)
• Drink safe and clean water
• Eat well-cooked food
• Avoid close contact with infected individuals
• Use mosquito protection (to prevent dengue/malaria)
• Stay updated with vaccinations
WHEN TO SEE A DOCTOR
• Fever lasts more than 2–3 days
• Temperature is above 39°C (102°F)
• Severe headache, persistent vomiting, or breathing difficulty
• Skin rash or unusual symptoms appear
• Fever in infants, elderly, or pregnant women
• Signs of dehydration (dry mouth, less urination)
